Biography
Sharon Reay discovered clay early in life, and after attending Vancouver School of Art, raised a family. Later she took ceramic classes at the Burnaby Arts Centre. Her first teacher was Gail Carney. Sharon joined the Burnaby Potters Guild and built her own studio.
Throughout her practice Sharon has added to her knowledge by attending dozens of workshops and symposiums, She sold through shops and galleries in the lower mainland, Washington State and the interior of BC. – the most notable of which was The Queensdale Gallery in North Vancouver, run by Muriel Olsen.
In 1989, Sharon started teaching in the community and at the Burnaby Arts centre, which became the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts in 1995. She instructed all ages until 1990, when she became an assistant to the Adult Programmer. Sharon then became ‘Adult Programmer’, followed by ‘Adult Visual/Ceramic Arts Programmer’ and finally the ‘Ceramic Arts Programmer’.
Sharon has been a key person in the BC ceramic community, building relationships and facilitating educational programs. During her decades as a programmer hundreds of ceramicists have held workshops and talks at the Shadbolt. She facilitated workshops held by the PGBC, the Speaker Series hosted by the NWCF, and Sharon was in place when the Canadian Clay Symposium was initiated in 2000, and where the Symposium is still held.
The success of the ceramic program at the Shadbolt - the most sophisticated in the Lower Mainland, outside of the colleges - led to an expansion of the department and the building of a very successful wood-fire program. Sharon retired from the Shadbolt in 2017.
In 2019 Sharon attended a residency at Museum of Anthropology, UBC , working in the Judith Cramner lab, and 2 of her pieces are held in the MOA Collection. She continues to work in her studio.
