Biography

"A prominent western Canadian painter, printmaker, draftsman, illustrator and educator, Jack Wise (aka: Jack Marlowe Wise) was born in Centerville, Iowa. He moved to British Columbia, Canada in 1963 and over the years lived in various places in the province such as Nelson, Cosy Cove (about 10 miles east of Vancouver), Texada Island, Denman Island and Victoria, where he died. He is the subject of an article in the Canadian Encyclopedia, his biography was in the Canadian Who’s Who for a decade, his works were shown in numerous important exhibitions, and his paintings, drawings and prints are in the permanent collections of several museums.

His mediums included oils, acrylics, gouache*, watercolors, pen & ink, graphite, Sumi-e ink*, serigraph*, lithograph* and woodcut*. His best known works were calligraphic style images and circular mandalas in gouache. His best known subjects were spiritualism, religion, mysticism, symbolism, fantasy, meditation, archetypal images and pure abstraction – color, shape, texture and line. His styles included Abstraction*, Abstract Expressionism*, Calligraphy*, Modernism*, Geometric Abstraction* and Surrealism*. (1)

Wise studied at the New Orleans School of Fine Arts, Louisiana (1949); and, earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Washington University, St. Louis (1950 – 1953) and a Master of Science degree in Art from Florida State University, Tallahassee (1955). His work was also influenced by that of Mark Tobey; by private classes and a friendship with Chin Lam (aka; Chin-Shek Lam); as well as by travels in India (1966) where he studied with Tibetan painting masters. He also traveled through Europe (1969).

After graduation Wise taught at Layton School of Art, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (1955 – 1956); at the artist's colony in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico (1956 – 1960); at the Victoria College of Art, Victoria, B.C., which he helped found in 1974; and at the Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts, Victoria, B.C. (c.1970s). He was a “visiting artist” at the University of Calgary (1984 – 1985). "
