Biography
"Vancouver artist Barb Wood, known for her often whimsical drawings of Vancouver landscapes, buildings and street scenes, has died.
Wood graduated with a degree in fine arts from the University of Waterloo in 1975 and shortly after moved to Vancouver with her husband, Don Hazleden, an architect. The couple have two sons, Arthur and Roger.
Since 1980, her company Barb Wood Graphics has produced works for a wide range of clients — corporate (including The Vancouver Sun), government, private, and galleries.
She also provided works to a number of charitable organizations.
In February 2009, Wood created the colour image for a special Vancouver Sun section marking the one-year countdown to the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The illustration features skiers, speed skaters and hockey players with backdrops of Whistler, the downtown skyline and Games venues including the Richmond Olympic Oval.
In 2006, she completed her Twelve Days of Christmas in Vancouver, a work designed to appear in 12 editions of The Vancouver Sun on various days over the Christmas period. The complete work was published Dec. 29 that year.
In it, 12 Jolly Carolers wearing Santa hats are aboard a tour boat rushing through Vancouver Harbour while on the top right corner, her Six-Planes Afloating are a squadron of float planes coming in through a snowfall framed by the North Shore Mountains with a crescent moon above.
Wood’s work was stuffed with detail and was worthy of close attention.
Her illustrated Vancouver map from the title page of The First 100 Years: An Illustrated Celebration, published in 1988, is a typical piece of her artistry.
She often converted her designs into etchings and then produced tinted handmade prints, which can be found in many homes and offices throughout British Columbia and beyond."
