Biography
Gordon Smith was born in East Brighton, England, and studied art in Canada, at the Vancouver Normal School, Vancouver School of Art, and the Winnipeg School of Art. Smith also enrolled in the Royal Winnipeg Rifles, and was a lieutenant, Platoon Commander, and an Intelligence Officer during his time with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, which he joined in 1942. After serving in the military Smith returned to Vancouver in 1944, and completed his art degree at the Vancouver School of Art, where he then taught art from 1945 to 1954. During this time Smith had two solo shows at the Vancouver Art Gallery, one in 1944, and the other in 1947. In 1951 Smith studied at the California School of Fine Arts, learning from Elmer Bischoff. From 1956 to 1982 Smith trained teachers in the faculty of education at UBC, and later formed the foundation Artists for Kids Trust.
