Biography
Amy Gogarty is an artist, writer, and educator who has achieved national and international recognition. Amy studied at Smith College, in Northampton, MA; at the Alberta College of Art, in Calgary, AB; and at the University of Calgary, where she earned her MFA in Painting in 1989. She exhibited her paintings locally and nationally in solo and group exhibitions. From 1990 to 2006, she taught Visual Art History and Theory in Liberal Studies at the Alberta College of Art and Design. Teaching the history of ceramics, she was encouraged by students to begin to make ceramics. She relocated to Vancouver in 2006, where she continued to make ceramics, combining the work with painting. She taught ceramics history at Emily Carr University for three semesters. In 2008 Amy joined the Board of the North-West Ceramics Foundation (NWCF), managing the website and the Speaker Series. She has also been an important contributor for the Craft Council of BC.
Amy has written, published or presented over one hundred and twenty critical essays or reviews on issues relating to Craft and the Visual Arts. She has served numerous times as a juror or panelist at national and international symposia. She collaborated with fellow practitioners Ruth Chambers and Mireille Perron to co-edit Utopic Impulses: Contemporary Ceramics Practice, and, with Nisse Gustafson, the third volume of the late Paula Gustafson’s important series, Craft Perception and Practice (both Ronsdale Press, 2007). In 2009 she was invited to be a guest artist and writer-in-residence at Medalta, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. In 2012, she curated Greg Payce’s solo exhibition Illusions at the Gardiner Museum in Toronto, and, in 2013, she was invited to New Zealand as the sole international juror for the Portage Award. In 2021, she was short-listed for the Canadian Craft Federation Robert Jekyll Award for Leadership in Craft, and she was elected an honorary member of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA). In 2022, she received the Craft Council of BC Citizen of Craft Award.
Amy has become an established studio ceramic artist, known for her plein-air paintings of Vancouver captured on her pottery. She sold functional ceramics through the Gallery of BC Ceramics until its close in 2018. Recently, she has been exploring sculptural ceramics, and she maintains a steady exhibition profile. Her talk and solo exhibition All Consuming, was hosted by the Craft Council of BC in 2022.
