Biography
Michael Huyghe was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. Upon completing high school, he traveled throughout Europe, and took his first pottery class at Finsbury Park Polytech in London, England. When he returned home in 1972, he began working in the family business, the Huyghe School of Pottery, and changed the name to Backdoor Pottery, which became a communal pottery studio. He continued his education in pottery, taking courses at the Vancouver School of Art, now Emily Carr College of Art Design, where he studied under John Reeve, Michael Henry and Clary Illian.
In 1980 he spent some months working at A.Harris Pottery & Son in the UK.
In 1983, Huyghe founded Terra Cotta in Vancouver, a commercial gallery which specialized in clay, paper, wood and glass. The gallery closed in 1990 and Huyghe has since started a new career in carpentry in the Vancouver area.
