Biography
Jean Clarke studied at Calgary's Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (now the Alberta College of Art) in the mid 1930s with Doris LeCocq. In 1945 she studied ceramics at the Art Institute of Chicago and later with Alexander Archipenko in New York.
She moved to Vancouver from Alberta in the late 1940s.
Jean McIntyre, as she was before marrying Stan Clarke, started making pottery around 1948 with her partner - and later husband - Stan Clarke.
The partnership produced slip-cast, hand-moulded and thrown work, often with figurative decoration by Jean. They began using the Reagh Studio name in 1950.
Between 1952 and 1956 the couple sold their work from a workshop-store at 3529 West 41st Street in Vancouver, moving in late 1955 to a location at 1573 West 6th Avenue for about one year. In late 1954, Reagh Studio had begun selling clay, kilns, and enameling supplies to the growing hobby market. In 1956, the Clarkes sold their business to Ruth Meechan (RM Potteries) and moved to Surrey around 1957, with Jean focusing on ceramic sculpture.
In addition to her basic ceramics training at the UBC Ceramic Hut in the mid 50s, Jean Clarke also attended the sculpture workshops at UBC with Alexander Archipenko (1957) and Louis Archambault (1959). In 1959 she won the Women's Auxiliary purchase prize at the BC Potters' 11th annual exhibition at the VAG (aka 2nd Biennial Crafts) for her abstract sculpture "Growing Things." In 1955 she started exhibiting ceramic sculpture nationally and in 1959, internationally.
From the late 50s to the 70s Jean became well-known for her ceramic sculptures of animals and human groupings which she sold through several galleries and shops, including the Canvas Shack (1964, 1965) the Hand Loom in Victoria (1968), the House of Ceramics (1973), the Clamshell at the Vancouver Aquarium (1974), and at the Water's Edge in North Vancouver (1975).
