Biography
John Borrowman, born in Montreal, attended the University of New Brunswick. His first training in clay was at the Georgian College where studied under Robin Hopper, Roman Bartkiw, and Roger Kerslake. He was an apprentice and then journeyman with Diane Creber and Ken Cumberland at Wilton Pottery, Ontario, from 1971-74.
After training in Ontario, John relocated to Alberta in 1975 with his wife Lynn, where he shared workspace with Tony Bloom at Stonecrop Studios.
John and his wife relocated to the interior of BC and opened Notch Hill Pottery in the interior of British Columbia in 1980, which operated until they returned to Canmore in 1985. So, in essence he was a potter in BC for only five years. (A new Notch Hill Pottery opened up in 2019 by Ontarian, Mitch Lehman)
John opened the Quest Gallery of Canadian Craftsmanship in Banff, Alberta in 1997 and later ran the Avens Gallery in Canmore, Alberta, which he sold in 2010. John served as Mayor of Canmore for 4 terms and is is now back in the pottery studio working with his daughter Katie Borrowman.
