Biography
Jeannie Mah has become one of the more celebrated ceramists of her generation in Canada. While completing her B.Ed in at the University of Regina, she studied with Vic Cicansky and Jack Sures. The University of Regina has maintained an influential ceramic department for decades, and Jack Sures has been a mentor for many students.
Jeannie then came to study at the Vancouver School of Art with Sally Michener and Tam Irving, where she became a life-long friend with fellow student, Bill Rennie (1953-2015); as they both worked small, they shared a studio space. (In 1990, Bill curated a catalogued exhibition April/Paris for Jeannie at the grunt gallery.)
After graduation in 1979, Jeannie rented a space at Backdoor Pottery, in Vancouver, and in 1980 Debra Sloan rented a weekend space from her.
Jeannie traveled a great deal, and in 1988/89, studied French language and Civilisation at the Université of Perpignan and at the Sorbonne in Paris, which solidified her love of France.
Jeannie returned to her home town of Regina in 1990, where cups of extreme delicacy which made reference to Minoan and Sèvres cups were used to tell stories of family and civic history, by way of photocopy transfers. Her vessels contain and display metaphoric messages about fragility and history and dwell in a conceptual sphere. One of her cups graces the cover of Studio Ceramics in Canada, by Gail Crawford.
Dismayed at the continuing architectural destruction of Regina, Jeannie has become involved in civic politics, in particular trying to save heritage houses, historic schools, and her beloved Wascana Pool. (Demolished in 2021)
In 2022 Jeannie was invited to hold a retrospective at the Jonathon Bancroft-Snell Gallery in Ontario.
