Biography
Kelly Austin was born in Vancouver, Canada and currently lives in Tasmania. She completed her BFA from Emily Carr University in Vancouver in 2011. While attending ECUAD , (Teachers - Paul Mathieu, Julie York , Justin Novak) in 2010, Kelly wrote a pertinent essay "Recognition Where It Is Due: The Influence of Bauhaus, Modern Design and Vancouverʼs Post World War II Culture on Female Ceramic Artists Mollie Carter and Hilda Ross."
In the essay she defends artists of the Modernist movement in BC, most of whom were female, who were consistently overlooked by the very popular Leach Mingei school. (Mostly male)
In 2015 Kelly was the recipient of Carter Wosk award from the BC Achievement Foundations.
Kelly took her Master of Philosophy in Ceramics from the Australia National University, Canberra in 2016.
Her work has been exhibited in curated exhibitions across Australia, Canada and USA and is held in public collections and frequently awarded. .
In 2017, Kelly received a Development Grant through the Australia Council for the Arts to undertake a mentorship with ceramic artist Kirsten Coelho.
Kelly has attended international residencies; QBank Gallery in Queenstown, Tasmania, Medalta International Ceramic Residency in Medicine Hat, Canada.
Kelly is known for her refined minimalist vessel forms arranged in considered tableaux, conveying notions around relationships between objects and architecture. Her work seems to continue the conversation around composition and connectivity also undertaken by artists from a generation before, Gwyn Hansson-Pigott (Australian) and Tam Irving (Canadian).
