Biography
Ping-Kwong Wong was born in China in 1944, and his family moved to Hong Kong in 1956.
In Hong Kong, he graduated from Sir Robert Black College of Education in 1971 and Grantham College of Education in 1972. He taught art and pottery at St. Stephen's College in Hong Kong from 1972 to 1994 and was an instructor of studio ceramic art at Hong Kong Polytechnic from 1987 to 1993. While teaching he studied Studio Ceramics from Hong Kong Polytechnic and received Higher Certification in 1983.
Mr. Wong graduated from Art education at the University of Wolverhampton in England in 1992. He immigrated to Canada and settled in Richmond, BC in 1994. He set up a home studio - where he has taught until the advent of Covid in 2020. He has given demonstrations and workshops to various potters' clubs and schools in Greater Vancouver districts, and has taught night school pottery classes for the Vancouver School Board. He was an important member of the Richmond Pottery Club and has participated in workshops for the Fraser Valley Potters Guild.
Mr. Wong has been a jury member for several public art projects by the City of Richmond and was on the Steering Committee for the Richmond Public Art Program from 1996 to 1997.
Mr. Wong has been a beloved teacher, and many of his previous students and members of the RPC and FVPG, like El Crighton, Stephanie Graves, Arlene Skelton and Lin Richardson were in contact and wrote about his teaching - he believed that students needed to have a good grasp of technique and once they did they should be free to make what they liked, he always shared his experience, and he had wonderful tools and gave workshops on tool making. He was mentor to Evan Ting-Kwok Leung who studied with him in his home studio from 1995 to 1998 and has gone onto international recognition.
Mr. Wong is particularly known as a natural and generous educator, for his beautiful puffer teapots, exquisite miniatures, his love of water birds and his metaphoric bird sculptures. He has exhibited in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, United States and in the lower mainland, at the Seymour Gallery, the Crystal Palace Mall in Burnaby, the Richmond Art Gallery, and the Canadian Craft Museum.
