Biography

Daniel Materna graduated from the Ceramics College of Arts in Bechyne, Czech Republic in 1965. After moving to Canada in 1968, his studio practice has been influenced by 1960's and 1970's West Coast art and Bohemian-European education and cultural influences.
Daniel founded the collective, Tanzar Crafts in 1974, on 4th Avenue in Vancouver, a big wooden Edwardian house, painted red. It was demolished in the mid 1980s. There were four pottery studio spaces; 2 in the house, which also had the large craft store, managed by Anna Materna, and 2 in a lean-to shed. A giant Maple tree stood in the middle of the courtyard. A large glaze/bisque gas kiln also in the courtyard. Potters who had worked at Tanzar ; Daniel Materna, Gerhard Kozel, Meg Buckley, Hiro Urakami, Sam Kwan, and Elise Seigle (part time Debra Sloan)
Daniel taught briefly at Pegs Place Pottery School. In 1987 he and his wife, Zuzy Vacek moved to a studio on Granville Island where they continue to work.
In 2016 Daniel took part in the wood-firing on Gordon Hutchen’s property, in honour and memory of Walter Dexter.
