Biography

Brendan Lee Salish Tang was born in Dublin. In 1982 His family immigrated to Nanaimo, BC. He first attended Malaspina University in Nanimo, before studying at NSCAD with Walter Ostrom for his BFA, graduating in 1998. He worked and exhibited in the Maritimes and in Nanaimo, and then moved on to Southern Illinois University to attain his MFA in 2006.
Brendan has become one of Canada's most prominent and exciting post-modernist artists; he is omnivorous in finding and exploring material, he is media-savvy, an insightful social and political commentator, and highly skilled in ceramics. He is probably best known for his Manga Ormolu series that he has been working on for over a decade. (See his website for explanation)
His work turns up in multiple videos, magazines and publications. Some galleries where his work has been exhibited are; UBC Museum of Anthropology, Gardiner Museum, Vancouver Art Gallery, Musee National Des Beaux-Arts du Quebec, Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche, Faenza, Musée d'Art Contemporain de Montréal, Boston Art Museum, the Foundation d’Entreprise Bernardaud, Limoges, France, among many others.
He has traveled, exhibited and taught across North America, India, Europe, the Middle East, Caribbean, China and Japan.
He has been a resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts (Helena, MT) and has participated in an international residency at the European Ceramic Work Centre ('s-Hertogenbosch, NL).
In 2021 he became an assistant professor (ceramics) at ECUAD alongside Julie York and Justin Novak.
In 2022 he received the Excellence in Culture Award from the City of Nanaimo.
