Biography
A few years after high school graduation Charmian Nimmo started pottery as an apprentice in 1978 with Richard Hoffman, in Richmond, BC. It was a pottery studio engaged in making functional ware, and she worked alongside Craig Thompson, Tom Mihalek, son of Joseph Mihalek, Anne Marie Veale, and Ron Pollak, until 1983. From there Charmian moved to the Backdoor Pottery on West 10th – formerly the Ross Hughye School of Pottery. Studio companions were Margaret McClelland, Phyllis Argyle, Gary Merkel, Jenny Penberthy (a poet), and Eve Leader, who later became a painter. From 1985 -88 Eve and Charmian established “Pots of Pleasure” a store on West 16th. After closing the store Charmian opened, The Clay Zone, on west Broadway that she ran until 1994 and then moved her studio into her home. In 2001, she took up the management of the pottery studio in the West End Community Centre and remained as manger until 2015.
During three decades of sustaining a production practice and store fronts, Charmian also taught at Aberthau Community Centre and the Westend Community Centre, until Covid. In 2010 she started teaching at the Shadbolt Arts Centre where she continues to teach.
In 2017 Charmian joined the Kingsmill Studio on Granville Island, and has worked alongside Don Hutchinson, Bob Kingsmill, Keith Lehman, Carole Henshall, Vin Arora, Tessa Reed, and Emma Canning, and continues to work there.
As a self-directed learner and worker, Charmian has sustained a disciplined 40-year practice making functional ware as well as exploring the figurative- mainly animal - as sculptural expression. She has also practised as an educator for over 3 decades, facilitating greater understanding and knowledge about ceramics in the broader community.
Charmian's work is available through the Kingsmill Studio, at Circle Craft Co-op , Crafthouse (CCBC) or Craft shows around Vancouver.
