Biography

Denys James was first attracted to ceramics while teaching in Prince George. In 1976 he went to Banff - instructor - Les Manning, and stayed on for two more years as Studio Tech, encountering ceramicists like John Chalke, John Reeve, Rudy Autio, Paul Soldner and Ruth Duckworth.
He also studied with National Living Treasure, Tatsuzo Shimaoka for 6 weeks.
Denys's first workshop as a teacher was on Saltspring Island in 1979.(He moved there permanently in 1984)
He has become a prolific educator, having taught in art institutes, and having conducted over sixty workshops in Canada, Italy, Mexico, Greece, Turkey, and the U.S.A.. He has explored techniques around amalgamating the Mexican style of adobe wood fired kilns with brick kilns, organizing adobe bottle kiln building workshops, and published an article in the Contact Magazine, out of Alberta.
He has also been a proponent of bas- relief, exploring coloured slip application and drawing in clay, publishing an article in Ceramics Art and Perception. His work has been featured in many publications.
Dianne Carr included Denys in her important 2013 exhibition, Back to the Land, held at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
Denys is also known for his very successful ceramic tours to exotic locations.
