Biography
Julie Oakes lives and works in Vernon, BC. She uses painting, ceramics, glass, performance, print making installation and video to address environmental protectionism, women’s rights, spiritualism, artistic activism and the benefits of cultural diversity, also identity politics and gender equity.
More recently she has focused on female sexuality, child bearing, domesticity, elder care and hospitality - her intention has been to speak about inclusive femininity – not feminism.
Julie earned her B.Education from UBC in 1975, and did teach art in primary and secondary classrooms. She holds a Masters in Visual Arts, NYU, and a Masters in Social and Political Science, New School for Social Research, New York. She has lectured and taught throughout her career.
Julie's solo shows in Canada; Vernon Art Gallery (2016, 2001, 1986), Canadian Clay and Glass Museum (2016, 2011), Penticton Art Gallery, The Varley Museum, Canadian Museum of Northern History, Alternator Gallery, and RCA Visuals.
Her International solo exhibitions include Rivington Gallery, London, England, Temple Gallery, Nassau, Bahamas, and Galerie TEST, Warsaw, Poland.
In 2014 Julie was invited to have a solo show, Awestruck Calendar, at the Gallery of BC Ceramics, by Manager, Laura Carey.
Recent invitational museum group exhibitions include Interwoven, Lodz, Poland, Kanadishe Woken, Germany, and the Anchorage Museum of Art.
Julie has written for Canon Magazine, New York, D’Arte International and Vies Des Arts magazine (2004 – 2018).
Julie wrote a trilogy of novellas 'Human Sacrifice ' from 2004 -2006. Her first novel 'Hooks' was published in 2011.
In 1994, Julie opened Headbones Gallery, Vernon. She moved to New York in 1998 to complete her Master degrees. In 2005 Julie and her partner Richard Fogarty moved to Toronto. In 2010 they returned to Vernon, BC where they designed and built Headbones Gallery and her studio.
