Biography
Dave Dobie and his wife Val run their pottery in Abbotsford, BC. In Dave's words, he has been quietly making pots since 1975.
He initially trained with Herman Venema in Abbotsford who lived down the road from where Dave lived. Herman was a full time potter and taught in the evenings. Cathi Jefferson was also a student of Herman's.
After working a summer (1978) at Herman's he went to Georgian College in Ontario and studied with English potter, Roger Kerslake, (1978-80) In 1979 he worked at Stan Clarke's studio for the summer, and in 1980 he worked the summer at Roger Kerslake's studio in Ontario.
Dave first set up a pottery in 1981 taking over the Beardlsey's store in Fort Langley. After 2 years he traveled, then took a Communications degree at SFU.
From 1985 -2005 he worked at Greenbarn Pottery with the redoubtable Stan Clarke, and was the Manager for the last 15 years.
After a family break with kids he started up again in 2012. He built a gas kiln at Herman Venema's and uses his salt /soda kiln. Dave sold through the Gallery of BC Ceramics,. He sells at the Audain shop in Whistler, and mainly though farmers markets and retail stores. .
Dave provides a range of fine functional pottery for his Fraser Valley community. He has kept a low profile and takes inspiration from Herman Venema and Ted Driediger, also both serving the Abbotsford community. Some other BC potters who has chosen the quiet, rural 'village potter' lifestyle - Gary Cherneff, Darrel Hancock, Robert Bush, Lari Robson, Heinz Laffin , Gerhard Kozel, and Meg Buckley.
