Biography
Gerhard Kozel, born in Germany and came to Canada - date unknown. He worked at Tanzar Crafts on 4th Avenue alongside Daniel Materna and Meg Buckley on and off during the 1970s. At some point in the 1970s he served on the Board of the Potters Guild of BC. He moved up to Hornby Island and quietly worked alongside Heinz Laffin making functional pottery until the end of his life. Mette Wullun, a graphic artist, studied with Heinz and Gerhard during the 80s, became Gerhrd's partner and then started working with them from the 1990s. Gerhard kept a very low profile and was somewhat overlooked by those researching the Leach / Mingei potters in BC. His pots were good and sound, and his glazing a bit more adventuresome than Heinz's - often using gesture and splash. Gerhard and Heinz are among the modest 'village potters' in BC, eg. John and Jennifer Davies of Haida Gwaii, Herman Venema, Dave Dobie, Gary Cherneff, Darrell Hancock, Lari Robson and Meg Buckley to name a few. They were potters who supported themselves through their practice and sold almost exclusively within their communities.
