Biography
Elise Siegel came to Canada in 1972. During her years in Vancouver she was known as LIsi. She enrolled at the Vancouver School of Art, studying with Sally Michener and Tam Irving at the beginning of their VSA teaching careers. She had already studied at the University of Chicago with renowned clay sculptor Ruth Duckworth, and remnants of Duckworth's influence can be seen.
Upon graduation Elise set up the Kitsilano Pottery with Larry Cohen and Suzu Matsuda (Speier). Her work captured the attention of Glenn Allison the curator of the UBC Fine Arts Gallery and she has a 2 man show with Denys James in 1979. Hiro Urakami also liked her work and she exhibited at the House of Ceramics.
Elise taught for the outreach program held by the VSA, traveling around BC. She gave several demonstrations for the Potters Guild of BC of her sculptural slab-work and she also demonstrated at the 1981 Malaspina Symposium in Nanaimo. BC.
In the late 1970s she moved studio to the Tanzar Crafts studio and joined the collective of Daniel Maternal (founder, 1974) Gerhard Kozel, Sam Kwan, Meg Buckley and Hiro Urakami. In 1980/81 Elise returned to Emily Carr to pursue graduate studies in sculpture. She had become a Canadian citizen, however she decided to return to New York, and has gone on to have a remarkable art career, at first in other media, but she returned to ceramics in the late 1990s and is credited with being one of a number of artists who has revitalized the use of figurative ceramics as a means of emotional expression. Elise taught ceramics at the Pratt Institute between 2008-11 and has taught at Greenwich House Pottery since 1985.
Elise has exhibited extensively in USA, and a great deal has been written about her practice.
