Biography

Vancouver, BC born and raised, Mariko Paterson attended Point Grey High School in the late 1980s where art-specialist teacher, Mary Daniel (NWCF Board) supported Mariko’s quest to explore art and ceramics as a career. She went on to Langara College (Don Hutchinson) the Alberta College of Art (Greg Payce) and achieved her Masters at Kent State University in 1998.
After graduating Mariko worked as a tech at Greenwich House Pottery in NYC. She then embarked on years of teaching and presenting at universities and conferences, including; Ohio University, University of Michigan, University of Manitoba, Canadian Clay Symposium, Vancouver, .Alberta College of Art once again and Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. She has attended residencies at Banff Centre, Red Lodge in Montana and the Guldagergaard’s International Ceramic Center in Denmark to name some.
Mariko set up a studio and design centre ’Feedlot’, on Gabriola Island in 2010, and in 2012 organized a ‘Forage Symposium’ on Gabriola, and “Drift”, an Indie Art Market & Show in Nanimo in 2012. During these years Mariko signed her work as Mariko McCrae.
Mariko moved to Nova Scotia in 2013 and set up Forage Studio in Lunneberg and also set up a decal printing business. Mariko’s clever ( laugh-out-loud) colourful, pun-rich, illustrative, and visually rich work is very collectable and has attracted patronage support. Her illustrations are hi-tech, multi-layered requiring multi-fires, using Mishima (Molly Hatch), decals, lustres and an array of coloured glazes. She shares techniques on her Star-Techy info page. (website)
Mariko is media-savvy, politically aware and draws ideas from popular culture including social justice commentary, and she subversively combines them with historical ceramic references to speak about and illustrate current (sometimes historic) events and political figures.
Recently, 2022, Mariko has relocated to Calgary and is establishing a new studio.
