Biography

Franz (Frank) Poll, was born in 1932 in Austria. He went to art school at the Kunstacademie in Innsbruck Austria and later, was a student at the Vienna Academy of Figurative Arts under sculptor Fritz Wotruba, who was considered one of the most notable sculptors of the 20th century in Austria. Wotruba greatly influenced Poll's work.

Poll emigrated to Canada in the early 60's settling in Okanagan Centre. Upon arriving in Canada, Poll wasted no time; he married, had two children and built a house and studio outside Vernon at the site of an old brickyard on Hwy 6. He opened his studio on June 10th 1966, however by the 70's, Poll found himself divorced and beginning again; this time he built a home and studio on Old Kamloops Road, (a place he would occupy for almost the next 50 years until his death).

Poll was an active member in the local arts community, teaching pottery locally and around BC. In 1968 he helped establish the Caribou Pottery Society by teaching a series of workshops.

Through the ‘80s Poll taught sculpture at Okanagan University College. He was an incredibly knowledgeable teacher due to his excellent training he received in Austria, (he not only worked in clay, but also glass, bronze and wood). He also readily shared and discussed his art philosophies and ideas with his students.

After retirement, Poll travelled to the Philippines where he met Amie, who was his wife until his death. Frank Poll died on March 21st, 2018.
