Maker Name

Mackie, Linda

Studio name

Swan Lake Pottery

Biography

Linda Mackie studied ceramics with Walter Dexter at the Kootenay School of Art (1969-1972) . Others at KSA at that time included potters Ted Driediger, Geoff Searle, and Robin Righton with whom she established Swan Lake Pottery (Victoria) in 1972.
In several ways, Mackie's career parallels Righton's. Both initially produced utilitarian stoneware, later working in porcelain and producing plates with figurative designs, with Righton's featuring landscapes and Mackie's portraits. Mackie also created figurative ceramic sculpture.
Both exhibited and sold together at the University of Victoria craft fairs, the Maples Gallery, the Hand Loom and the Empress Hotel pre- Christmas sales. While exhibiting as Swan Lake Pottery each stamped their work with their own names. For part of that time they both adopted marks using similar-sized upper case letters.
Mackie appears to have left Swan Lake Pottery around 1985, continuing pottery independently for a few years.
