Biography
Aguilar came to Vancouver Island in 1974.
A Bonsai specialist, he ran a commercial plant business in the late 1970s. Motivated to make pots for his plants, he studied pottery with Byron Johnstad at Malaspina College 1979-80. He was one of several students to win a David Lambert Award there.
During that year, he established his studio at his garden (Good Earth Farm) near Qualicum Beach and began making functional pots, followed by raku around 1985, later also making ceramic sculpture. Concerned with making a living, he exhibited and marketed his work extensively at galleries and shops in Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum and Port Alberni, also selling at his studio. Occasionally, he had shows in Tsawwassen (Marshall Clark Gallery, 1999, 2004) and Victoria (AGGV gift shop, 1985, 1986; Empress Hotel, 1981; Marshall Gallery, 1989)
From the early 80s on, he taught numerous workshops and gave pottery demonstrations primarily on central Vancouver Island.
Aguilar was involved in the saving and redevelopment of the Old School House Gallery and art centre in Qualicum where he also exhibited and demonstrated.
He was a frequent exhibitor (between 1995 and 2007) with the Mid-Island Potters group which held sales at the Tigh-Na-Mara resort near Parksville and in Victoria.
