Biography

In 1929, Gatewood was in the first graduating class of the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts. She took the first pottery classes there in 1927-1928, the year they were introduced. In 1930 she started producing pottery with former VSDAA student Hilda Jane Wattie (1883-1972) using the name Van-Craft Pottery. Between 1930 and 1940, Gatewood was on the staff of the VSDAA (later called the Vancouver School of Art) where she taught mainly night school classes.
She also taught at the Vancouver- based Summer School for teachers in 1936 and 1938. In the 1930s she exhibited with two artists' groups: the Pioneer Art Students of Vancouver Art School (PASOVAS) and the Vancouver School of Art Graduates' Association.
From 1936 to1940 she shared a studio with bookbinder Dorothy Burnett in the old Imperial Bank Building at Dunsmuir and Granville.
Note:this pot with its distinctive signature, was found in a Vancouver dumpster in 2012, and given to DES by Kathy Roads, who recognized it may be of importance.
