Biography
Herman Venema, was born in Holland, 1940. He immigrated to Vancouver in 1952. In 1962 he attended the University of Michigan, Calvin College attaining his BFA.
in 1963-65, he took pottery classes at the UBC Faculty of Education with Stan Clarke. He attained his MFA at the University of Puget Sound, studying with Carlton Ball. He has been working at his Harris Road studio in Abbotsford since 1970, as well as teaching at high schools and at the Fraser Valley College. Herman has been a venerated teacher -notable students, Cathi Jefferson (student for 16 years) and Dave Dobie.
Since his retirement from class room teaching in 2005, he has re-opened his studio and he continues to hold classes.
Some other BC potters who has chosen the quiet, rural 'village potter' lifestyle - Gary Cherneff, Darrel Hancock, Robert Bush, Lari Robson, Heinz Laffin , Gerhard Kozel, and Meg Buckley.
