Biography
Tobias Tomlinson has been a working potter for 40 years. He was born in Illinois, and in 1969 immigrated to Canada. He took his BFA at the University of Calgary with instructors that included Harlen House, Hal Regar, Jack Surs, Marylin Levine, Santo Mignosa and Léopold Foulem. 1971 to 1974 Working with a master potter in Grey Creek and Creston, B.C. using Native found clay as glaze and working material.
He lived in Nelson from 1971-73 at the Jam Factory Pottery Collective, and selling in the Nelson Gift sho, .and then took his B.Ed at the University of Victoria 1974-76. He has been an instructor at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria. He is a member of the South Vancouver Island Guild, and has a studio in Victoria. He has exhibited widely in BC.
Note; Tobias took first course in jewelry at Illinois State University in 1968.. He attended several drop-in advanced level classes at London Metropolitan University in London, UK in silver-smithing in 2011.
As a weaver, he has visited weavers in Greece, met National Heritage weavers in Thailand, and spent hours tying Ikat warps with women on the island of Flores in Indonesia, and taken courses in back-strap weaving with Quiche First Nations women in Guatemala.
In the early 2000s, Tobias discovered that his great-grandmother was from the Chickasaw Cherokee nation, and he has been exploring his First Nations heritage since this discovery. This is reflected in his use of medicinal, herbal, and food plant forms as design motifs that can be found in his ceramics, textiles and jewellery.
