Biography
Gunda Stewart attended the VSA from 1976 and was inspired by the Leach-Hamada-Yanagi school of thought. Tam Irving her teacher at the VSA. Fellow students during those years, Laura Wee Láy Láq , Rhonda Green, and Ellen Zeis. She left Vancouver in 1993 to set up her studio in the Interior.
Gunda is a very fine functional potter who throws on a kick wheel. Her work is quiet, with strong forms, and beautifully fired. She has been wood-firing since 2004 at her studio in Canyon. She has also fired in Cameron Stewart ‘s wood kiln in Passmore, BC. She decided in 2012 to only sell locally, (Creston) which meant giving up the Gardiner Gallery in Toronto and other galleries across Canada. Some other BC potters who has chosen the quiet, rural 'village potter' lifestyle - Gary Cherneff, Darrel Hancock, Robert Bush, Lari Robson, Heinz Laffin , Gerhard Kozel, and Meg Buckley.
