Biography
Phyllis Schwartz was born in Brooklyn and immigrated to Canada. Phyllis is a multi-diciplinary artist focusing on photography and ceramics. From 2005 she worked as artist in residence based out of Tupper Secondary heading a ceramics. programme. In 2008 she initiated, through a discovery of Glenn Lewis's UBC 1972 glaze recipes, and became the project editor of, "'Seeking the Nuance: Glaze Experiments from the Ceramic Studios at UBC'" a collaboration with Glenn Lewis and Debra Sloan, published in 2009 and second edition 2017. This publication was discovered by Dr. Alex Lambley of Falmouth University (UK) and contributed to her decision to focus her PhD and dissertation on Bernard Leach' diaspora BC.
In 2015 Phyllis and husband Edward Peck initiated a collective BestB4 and mounted a cataloged exhibition 'Telling Stories' at the Chinese Cultural Centre , Vancouver. They are also the team behind Sassamat Publishing .
Phyllis’s work is in public, corporate and private collections as well as auctioned at galas and fundraisers. Exhibitions include Art4Life (Port Moody Art Centre), Interior Design Show West and In the Palm of a Hand: BC to Japan Touring Exhibition.
