Biography
English born, Celia Rice-Jones trained in the UK, in the Leach/ Cardew traditions at the Longborough College. She taught pottery at several levels of competency and exhibited in the UK before relocating to Canada.
In 1988 she and husband Keith Rice-Jones set up their pottery studio in New Westminster and though they have been studio partners for over three decades, they have distinctly different practices - Celia is a fine production potter, and Keith is a sculptor. Celia sold through the Gallery of BC Ceramics, and sells through Circle Craft Co-op and their biannual home sales out of their fine studios and gardens. Her work has been selected for and exhibited at the Gallery of BC Ceramics, the Craft Museum, and Museum of Vancouver, among many other BC Galleries. Celia and Keith traveled, resided and took part in wood-firings and exhibitions in Nagoya and Tajimi, in Japan, and the famed Sturt Craft Centre in Australia.
Both Celia and Keith Rice-Jones have been important and loyal volunteers (Gallery Committee) for the Potters Guild of BC, and have supported ceramic endeavours and education in BC. In 2018 they were recognized for their exemplary volunteerism and professional practices when presented with the ‘Hilda Gerson Award’ from the Craft Council of BC.
Keith and Celia have worked together on several public art projects. In 2001 they facilitated the making of tall poles, made in sections, with the school kids in Burnaby decorating each section with narratives. The tall and handsome 'Burnaby Millennium Sculpture Poles' are located in the gardens at the Shadbolt Art Centre. Other works can be seen in the Michael J Fox Theatre lobby, the Lindau Mural, and the large Shabolt floor mural, composed of sections by each ceramic teacher, at the Loheed Mall .
Celia is known for her graceful throwing and for her handsome and functional pottery that can be found in peoples’ homes around the province. Everyone has a favourite Celia mug or bowl.
