Biography

Paul Mathieu is one of Canada's esteemed contemporary ceramicists, renowned nationally and internationally for his provocative ceramics and for his rigorous and exploratory texts. Always an educator and craft theorist, he has made his texts, including his essays, 'The Art of the Future' available on his website.
Paul Mathieu studied in Montreal, Calgary, Stoke on Trent, Banff, and achieved his MA in San Francisco and his MFA in UCLA.
He has been artist-in-residence at the Banff Centre, the Tama Art Studios in Machida, Japan, the International Ceramics Studio in Kecskemet, Hungary, and he has returned four times to the San Bao International Ceramics Studio in Jingdezhen, China.

Paul is one of the most awarded ceramic artists in Canada; the Le Grand prix des métiers d’art du Québec; the Chalmers Award in Crafts, the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (Fine Craft), and the Mayor's Arts Award, Vancouver. His research and residencies have been supported by numerous fellowships and Canada Council Grants.

Paul's work is held in significant public collections, some being, the Vancouver Art Gallery, Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts, the Gardiner Museum, The Shigaraki Museum for Contemporary Ceramic Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Victoria and Albert Museum, UK.

Paul has taught in Montréal, San Francisco, San Miguel and Paris, and a respected lecturer at numerous symposiums.
He was the Head of the Ceramics Department at Emily Carr University of Art and Design from 1996 - 2019.
Throughout his practice Paul has searched for validity in craft in the present-day context, while believing that ceramics could be a vehicle for commentary and subversion.
Notably, Paul introduced contemporary critical theory to the ECUAD ceramics programme. He was/is an erudite and exceptional lecturer. He was Head of the Ceramics Department at ECUAD for 23 years and his influence endures. The art practices of some of his students - Eliza Au, Aaron Nelson, Sam Knopp, Jeremy Hatch, Kate Metten, and Amelia Butcher reflect the acumen gained from theoretical discipline.
As a contrary and inimitable ceramic artist his own tactics have fluctuated between lavish unrestrained hand-painted surfaces on pottery, to mechanized fabrication. In his words "My aim is to reconcile extremes and oppositions, destroy hierarchies and confuse conventions. "
In 2020 Paul put his work in storage and he has stepped back from his art practice - only for now, we hope.
