Biography
Mark Lawrence graduated in 1969 Carson Graham Senior Secondary, North Vancouver, and attended Grade 13 studying in the art department. He holds an Advanced Diploma in Ceramics 1974 from the Vancouver School of Art, studying under John Reeve (former apprentice of Bernard Leach), Reg Dixon, and Leonard Epp.
Mark taught glaze chemistry at the Vancouver School of Art for Continuing Education night school program. In 1975 he joined a group of 12 potters called Clayworks Society in Richmond, BC where they fired a 200 cubic foot gas Car kiln, and a 100 cubic foot Salt kiln, producing hundreds of functional and decorative pots in porcelain and stoneware fired to cone 10.
Mark was employed by Estrin Manufacturing for 24 years designing and building pottery kilns and equipment for the glass and ceramic industry. Supervisor for 5 years at Interstyle Ceramic Tile and Glass running the clay department, extruding, pressing, molding, and research and development working with clay and glass. During this time, early 2000s, he also made pots up at Capilano College with Sam Kwan where he rebuilt and fired the salt kiln which is no longer standing. (Capilano Ceramic Department has been dismantled)
Mark has retired and continuing his passion for clay giving workshops in pottery throughout BC. His other great passion is Photography.
