Biography

American born, Byron Johnstad trained in ceramics at the Chicago Institute, and received his MFA at the California College of Art, before he immigrated to Canada in 1967. He just missed a job teaching at the Vancouver School of Art and instead taught community classes, held numerous workshops, and did some curatorial work until he set up his own studio. He taught at Capilano College (student-Linda Doherty) and the Burnaby Arts Centre in the late 1970s.
Highly skilled, influenced by Scandinavian design, he was removed from the locally prevalent Leach Mingei tradition, and his work attracted attention. Dianne Carr often featured his work at the Cartwright Street Gallery, later to become the Canadian Craft Museum. His work was also exhibited at the House of Ceramics.
He moved to Vancouver Island and set up a studio in Ladysmith, however, by 1984 back problems stopped his work in clay.
Byron moved to Kelowna and from 2007 - 2013 taught History & Design at the Centre for Arts and Technology / Okanagan.
Byron's work was represented in the 2013 ‘Back to the Land, Ceramics from Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands 1970 - 1985’ curated by Dianne Carr, held in at the art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
