Biography
Gillian Hodge studied art in India, in England and at the Vancouver School of Art in the mid-1960s. She taught many pottery workshops around the province including at the Okanagan Summer School of the Arts (raku, 1966; children’s class, 1967), in Courtenay (1968), on Salt Spring Island (raku, 1969) and at Notre Dame University College in Nelson, BC. By the late 60s, she had ventured into raku, teaching it and also studying it with Hal Riegger. She later worked and exhibited with him in California, where she would live permanently, starting in the early 70s. In 1969, Hodge had an exhibition at the Mary Frazee Gallery, West Vancouver, where her raku was described by Charlotte Townsend (Vancouver Sun, Nov 19, 1969) as “free expressions of the way clay goes” and coloured in “vivid reds and ochres, an occasional surprising bright green.” She was active in the BC Potters Guild as the editor of the group’s newsletter, The Western Potter (1969–71), and as a jury member for their exhibition Ceramics 73 at the House of Ceramics, Vancouver.
