Biography
Darrel Hancock is a respected production potter in BC, who has been making popular functional stoneware pottery for over 40 years. After graduating from Emily Carr College of Art in 1980, Darrel Hancock and Robert Bush formed Mainstream Pottery and worked together from 1980 to 1985.
For the next decade, Darrel threw pots for 10 other production potters, building his skills, and developing his craft. During that time he taught at the Surrey Arts Centre, Community Centres in White Rock, Place Des Artes and the Shadbolt Centre. He also did many presentations for various Pottery Guilds and Groups on the Mainland and Vancouver Island.
Over the years Darrel has sold his pottery to many gift shops throughout BC and Albert, at Craft Fairs on the Mainland and Vancouver Island, at Gallery of BC Ceramics and at Circle Craft Co-Op.
Darrel moved to Vancouver Island in November 2004 and settled in the Qualicum Beach area. He set up the Darrel Hancock Pottery home Studio and Gallery where he now sells his pottery locally and to National and International pottery enthusiasts. In 2013 he opened his home Gallery and now sells exclusively from his Gallery, at local Craft Fairs and online from his website.
Gary Cherneff coined the phrase 'Village Potter', and this term certainly relates to Darrell's practice, as one of many fine Production potters ( Lari Robson, Gerhard Kozel, Hienz Laffin, Meg Buckley, Gunda Stewart) who have quietly settled into their rural communities and have successfully sustained the 'Leach Mingei' work / live lifestyle.
