Biography

Jackie Frioud received her BFA from UBC in printmaking and sculpture in the 1980s, and then started a family. Ronda Green was her first throwing teacher at the Eagle Harbour Community Centre in West Vancouver.
In 2000 she discovered salt glazing with instructor Sam Kwan at the Capilano College, and was impacted at an artist talk by Miki Schossingk, from Wales - about functional ware and salt glazing. Other important contacts have been Kelly Austin (now in Australia) , Kasumi Lampitoc, (Galliano Island) Sam Knopp (now in Alberta), Cathi Jefferson (Duncan, BC), and Nora Vaillant (Vancouver BC). In 2007 she built a kiln in Horseshoe Bay, BC where she worked as a salt-glaze production potter until she moved her kiln to the Tidal Art Centre in Lund, BC in 2017. She maintains a shared studio at the Mergatroid Building in Vancouver, but travels to Lund to salt-fire. Jackie also sold and exhibited her work through the Gallery of BC Ceramics.
Known for her elegant minimalist (with a nod to Modernism) salt-glazed pottery , Jackie was the recipient of the North-West Ceramics Foundation - Award of Excellence, in 2018, along with activist/ceramicist Judy Chartrand.
