Biography
For more than 40 years Linda Doherty has been an integral part of the BC ceramics community, as a distinguished maker, as a member of the dynamic team at the Shadbolt Centre, as a tireless volunteer (Awarded a Lifetime membership of the Potters Guild of BC) and as a teacher.
Linda was born in the foothills of the Rockies. In 1974 Linda started her practice at classes at the Burnaby Arts Centre - which became the Shadbolt Centre. She attended Capilano College 1979/80, teacher, Byron Johnstad. By 1994 she was hired as a technician at the Shadbolt, has worked alongside of Jay Maclennan, and continues to be an essential presence there.
She has served on the Boards of the North-West Ceramics Foundation, Potters Guild of BC, and the Canadian Clay Symposium. She sold through the Gallery of BC Ceramics.
Linda was also a member of the Mudslinger Studio in downtown Vancouver from 1997-99.
In 1998 Linda was the driving force behind the book ‘Made of Clay’, that represented 129 BC potters, with foreword by Carol Mayer and photographs by Ken Mayer. It was a big production funded by the Potters Guild of BC, and is an informative, award winning, collectable book, and has been a resource for this Registry.
Linda has attended dozens of workshops, eg; Les Manning, Santo Mignosa, Laura Wee Láy Láq , Robin Hopper, Gordon Hutchens, Bob Kingsmill and John Leach, and has traveled worldwide to learn, attending residencies in Medalta, Japan, Australia, USA, and China and taught around the province and abroad.
A multifaceted technician, and an exploratory maker, she has created and shares a wide base of knowledge, skilled at extrusion fabrication, wood, salt, raku and primitive firing, and crystalline glazes.
