Biography
Mary Daniel attained her BFA University of Saskatchewan, Regina, in ceramics and painting. Her teachers were Jack Sures, David Gilhooly, Joe Fafard, and Russel Yuristy. She worked as a personal assistant to Marilyn Levine.
Mary moved to Vancouver in the early 1970s and taught at the Vancouver School of Art, the Ross Hughye School of Pottery, and at Peg's Place Pottery School.
Mary became an Art Specialist within the Vancouver School Board, and received a provincial award as an outstanding art teacher. She also taught in the Visual and Performing Arts Department of the University of British Columbia. After attaining her Masters of Arts, she worked as Vice Principle for the School Board, and finally as the Principle for Kitsilano High School in Vancouver, during which time she achieved her PhD in Education and Leadership and Policy, UBC.
Mary has been a dedicated volunteer and was among the founders of the Craft Council of BC (now the CCBC) as well as the BC Community Arts Council, and she is currently the secretary for the North-West Ceramics Foundation.
Mary left teaching in 2009 and re-started her ceramics practice, attending a number of residencies in Hungary, Italy, and Japan from 2010 until the pandemic. She has exhibited widely in BC, including the House of Ceramics, the Gallery of BC Ceramics and Crafthouse. Mary prefers to work in reduction fired porcelain, and is known for her fine throwing, her slip casting. and her painterly approach to surface decoration.
