Biography
American born, Bill Boyd first made contact with pottery while attending Leksand’s Folkhogskola Art School in Sweden, in 1970. He established Solbacken Ceramics studio in South-West Sweden. He considers himself largely self taught, and has been influenced by Scandinavian Design and the Leach / Mingei aesthetic and philosophy. Initially he worked with the classic glazes - temokus, celedons and shinos.
He moved to Canada (date Unknown) and since 2002 he has been one of the early explorers and proponents of the highly technical and unpredictable practice of crystalline glazing. He throws handsome classically shaped vessels as a canvasses for his glazes. He refers to his work as being part of new traditions in ceramics, as 'Nouveau-classique'. Articles about his work can be found in a number of publications. His studio is now on Galiano Island. He sold through the Gallery of BC Ceramics. His work is well known and he has been exhibiting in BC, Ontario and abroad in USA, Netherlands and Germany.
