Biography
Kiss studied architecture at the Technical University in Budapest in the early 1940s. He fled wartime Hungary in 1944 spending five years in Denmark where he worked at the Knabstrup Pottery as an artist. After his arrival in Vancouver in 1950, he taught pottery for a short time with the Extension Department at UBC and completed his architecture degree at UBC (1951). In the early 1950s, Kiss was one of the few potters in BC with training and experience and he won at least two purchase prizes at BC Potters annuals (UBC,1959; VAG, 1958). He was also a frequent exhibitor at the biennial Canadian Ceramics exhibitions. His pottery was featured in Western Homes and Living, July 1961 and has been shown more recently in craft and design retrospectives in Victoria and Vancouver.
As a busy architect starting in the 1950s, pottery was an after-hours activity. In the 1950s, Kiss worked for Thompson, Berwick and Pratt and was involved in that firm's design for the Koerner Graduate Centre at UBC. After establishing his own practice in 1962, Kiss designed the ..... at Simon Fraser University and the Vancouver Airport. (Need review)
