Biography
McCrea studied painting, textile design, and ceramics at the Vancouver School of Art (1937 -1941, post-grad year 1941-1942). Between 1941 and 49, she frequently taught at the VSA: night school pottery with Doris Le Cocq (1941-46) and pottery and design with Grace Melvin (late 1940s). During the 1940s she was also responsible for firing student work on the school's 3 kilns.
In the early 40s she taught herself to use a homemade potter's wheel, later studying ceramics and throwing on the wheel with Carlton Ball in San Francisco (1944).
In 1946-47, she went to Britain on a Commonwealth scholarship, studying ceramics at the Camberwell School in London, with Bernard Leach at St Ives (2 weeks), and at the Wedgwood factory at Barleston (6 weeks). While in Britain she also received instruction in glaze chemistry, wood-firing and use of the potter's wheel with Richard Bateson and exhibited pottery with other Camberwell students.
Her work was featured in the article "Pottery in Canada" (Canadian Geographical Journal, Feb 1944)
Around 1950 she made16 pairs of ceramic figurines for the Wedgwood Dining Room, in Vancouver's Georgia Hotel.
In the 50s she was active in the Federation of Canadian Artists as an organizer of the early pottery exhibitions at UBC and later elsewhere and was treasurer of the BC Potters Guild when formed in 1955.
In 1956, she attended the Archipenko sculpture workshop at UBC.
In the 50s she concentrated on fabric design and around 1960 left BC to study and teach in the US, later returning to Port Alberni where she taught high school art.
