Biography
Lothian was a well-known china painter and potter in Victoria from 1915 to the 1950s. Along with Margaret Grute, she studied pottery with Mary Young at the Victoria Summer School for Teachers in 1923, making her one of BC's first potters. She received further training at the California School of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, California in the summer of 1926 and in china painting with Walter Titze in Seattle, 1924.
Her china painting often featured gulls or wildflowers; her pottery, decorated with Indigenous-inspired designs. For many years she used clay dug from the banks above the beach along Dallas Road, near her home studio. She was a frequent exhibitor with the Island Arts and Crafts Society from the 1920s to the the 1940s.
