Biography

American born Justin Novak achieved his BFA in Communications Design from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY in 1983. Justin spent over fifteen years working as a freelance illustrator in New York City, for clients like The New York Times, The New York Daily News, and Macmillan Publishing. He received his MFA in 1996 from the State University of New York (SUNY), and taught there from 1997-2000. He has also taught at the University of Oregon, and the City University in Jersey.
Justin was an invited artist-in-residence at the International Ceramic Center in Skaelskor, Denmark in 2001, 2005 and 2007 and at the Watershed Center, Newcastle, Maine in 2003. He has been visiting guest artist at several institutions including the Parsons School of Design (2002), The Ohio State University (2003) and the Rhode Island School of Design (2003).
Justin has attended international residencies; the Kohler Factory in Wisconsin, the Walbryzch Factory in Poland, the Arabia Factory in Helsinki and the National Workshops of Art and Crafts in Copenhagen. His work has been written about extensively / see website for more information.

Justin brought his extensive teaching and studio experience to Vancouver in 2007 and became an Associate Professor in ceramics and illustration as Emily Carr Institute became the Emily Carr University. He taught in the ceramics program with Paul Mathieu (Retired 2019) and presently teaches in the illustration program alongside ceramics faculty Julie York and Brendan Tang.

Justin's work encompasses figurative sculpture to utilitarian objects, and he is known for his slip cast character-figures, and his subversive and affecting commentary using the historical genre of figurine, with what he calls his 'Disfigurine".
