Gary Merkel became interested in clay while still a teenager and chose the freedom of hand-building. He attended Confederation College in Thunder Bay. In Vancouver he was a member of the Backdoor Pottery during the early 1980s and discovered porcelain. Gary refers to himself as closet painter, and sees the clay as a canvas. Gary moved to Victoria in 1984 and became a member of the collective, Fired UP, from 1984 -91, and 2006 to present day.
